Rhinoplasty complications are often relatively minor and correctable, but more serious, debilitating, and uncorrectable complications do occur. Despite the best efforts of talented surgeons, unanticipated technical problems can and do occur during surgery that can lead to a complication. Rhinoplasty revision surgery is a nose operation performed to correct or revise an unsatisfactory outcome from a previous nose surgery. An unsatisfactory outcome occurs from 5% to 20% of nose surgeries. There are two main reasons for performing secondary nose surgery. Patients often seek secondary nose surgery to correct a cosmetic deformity of the nose. A patient may be unsatisfied with all or part of a previous nose reshaping. The reduction of the nasal fracture may be not enough, or too much. Inappropriate addressing of a prominent or bulbous nasal tip may have not been or over-aggressively. The nose looks pinched; it may look like a parrot's beak, or like a boxer's nose. Nose surgery may have left a nose aesthetically unappealing to a patient in many ways. Another reason for rhinoplasty revision is functional. The original nasal surgery may have been to help with difficulties in breathing and the outcome may have been unsatisfactory. Alternatively, the original cosmetic surgery disrupted a normal physiologic mechanism involving the inspiration or expiration of air, making it difficult to breathe. Secondary nose surgery is a procedure often said to be extremely complicated. Because the surgery may destroy or deform nasal framework, nose surgery experts must frequently reconstruct the support structures of the nose using cartilage grafts either from the ear or from rib cartilage. Advances in nose surgery techniques, such as stabilization of rib cartilage grafts and utilization of the open approach, now allow satisfactory results in secondary nose surgery.

Treatment Gap

The treatment gap is massive among those who need treatment for a substance use disorder and do not receive it. In 2007, 23.2 million people aged 12 or older required treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol use problem, but only 3.9 million received treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility. Reducing this gap requires a multipronged approach. Strategies include increasing access to effective treatment, achieving insurance parity, and reducing stigmas and raising awareness among both patients and health care professionals.

Eyelid Complication

Eyelid complications related to patient dissatisfaction may be preventable before or correctable after surgery. To avoid aesthetic eyelid complications, it is important for a patient to understand the procedure and what kind of results to expect. Patients may complain of being unable to close their eyes completely. If the surgeon removes too much skin during the initial surgery, the surgeon may harvest tissue from the mouth to elevate the tissue on the inside of the eyelid. Alternatively, the doctor may decide to use skin from behind the ear, which closely resembles eyelid skin. Some patients end up unhappy with the results of eye surgery and require corrective cosmetic procedures as well as functional surgery. Revision surgery can be complex in nature. Tissue around the eyes and lids is extremely sensitive and surgery can cause several issues. On many occasions, eye surgery alters the shape of the eye: the rounded shape of the eye corners appears instead of the natural shape. In many cases, the natural shape of the eyes is also not symmetrical. Misshapen eyelids can cause irritation when blinking and often patients complain of dry eyes. Eyelid complications are the potential risks associated with eyelid surgery. The risk of eyelid complications is relatively rare, though when they do occur they can be quite injurious. There are a number of different types of blepharoplasty complications. Patients may be dissatisfied with the results because of unrealistic expectations, poor surgical choices by an inept surgeon who performed an under correction, or resulted in asymmetry. There are also significant medical complications associated with eyelid surgery. Eyelid complications may be associated with the actual surgery or be problems that develop during the recovery period.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen agents prevent sunburn. Limiting exposure to the sun and using sun block and sunscreen when in the sun may help prevent early wrinkling and skin cancer. There are two kinds of sunscreen agents: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreen agents protect the skin from the sun by absorbing the ultraviolet (UV) and visible sunrays, while physical sunscreen agents reflect, scatter, absorb or block these rays. Sunscreen agents often contain more than one ingredient. For example, products may contain one ingredient, which provides protection against Ultraviolet A (UVA) sunrays, and another ingredient that protects the skin from the Ultraviolet B (UVB) sunrays, which are more likely to cause sunburn than the UVA rays. Ideally, sunscreen coverage should include protection against both UVA and UVB sunrays. The sun protection factor (SPF) found on the label of these products indicates the minimum amount of UVB sunlight the product protects from. It compares the redness associated with protected versus unprotected skin. Sunscreen products with high SPFs provide more protection against the sun.
